John started working at Alexander Forbes in 2001. During this time he consulted to a number of large clients as valuator, employee benefits consultant and investment consultant. He was also the Cape Town branch head for a number of years and later on became national head of consulting strategy and then MD of Research & Product Development.
John also worked as a senior executive at Sygnia Asset Management where, amongst other things, he developed a new umbrella fund offering, a unique post-retirement annuity solution and a customised smoothing portfolio management for blue collar workers. He also provided large clients with investment advice as their portfolio manager, managing a range of customised multi-manager portfolios and overseeing the quants department.
He then re-joined Alexander Forbes in May 2017, as head of Group Client Solutions.
In 2016, John co-authored a paper awarded the prize for the Best Paper by First Time Authors and the Best Overall Paper presented at the 2016 Actuarial Convention. This paper was also accepted to be presented at the International Congress of Actuaries' 2018 conference in Berlin.
John is a previous member of various industry bodies, including the Research Committee and Retirement Matters Committee of the Actuarial Society of South Africa, ASISA Retirement Standing Committee, ASISA Retirement Reform Committee.
He is currently a member of the Council of the Actuarial Society of South Africa.
John presents regularly at industry conferences, locally and internationally, on employee benefit matters.
